SALMOVAC SE
Freeze-dried live Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine for oral use in chickens.
Qualitative and quantitative composition
A single dose of vaccine (1 ml reconstituted vaccine) contains not less than 1 x 108 colony-forming units of a genetically-stabile, double-attenuated (adenine-histidine auxotrophic) S. Enteritidis mutant.
Pharmaceutical form
Freeze-dried live vaccine, for oral administration via drinkers after reconstitution with drinking water.
Immunological properties
Oral vaccination of chickens results in epidemiologically relevant reduction in the level of shedding and persistence of Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium organisms.
Horizontal and vertical chains of infection are prevented or very substantially reduced in scope in flocks where high numbers of salmonella organisms are present.
Onset of immunity: 6 days after vaccination. Duration of immunity after single oral vaccination has been demonstrated up to 7 weeks after the vaccination.
Vaccination against Salmonella Enteritidis:
Efficacy was demonstrated in field studies of layers up to week 74 after hatching following 2x oral immunization.
Using an oral challenge model, with a challenge dose corresponding to a high number of salmonella organisms, the efficacy of the vaccine was demonstrated up to day 257 in birds vaccinated twice. The efficacy was assessed on the basis of the number of organisms in the liver and caeca and was statistically significant. Partial protection was found to continue up to week 79 (day 554) after hatching – with significantly lower numbers of salmonella organisms in the liver or caecum.
Vaccination against Salmonella Typhimurium:
Using an oral challenge mode birds vaccinated 3x were found to be protected against Salmonella Typhimurium up to week 73 after hatching.
Use of the vaccine does not affect serological testing against Salmonella Gallinarum (rapid serum agglutination test).
The attenuated vaccine strain can be distinguished from wild type Salmonella Enteritidis strains using the IDT Salmonella Diagnostic Kit.
ATC vet code: QI 01 AE 01
