Holistic approach in accordance with animal health, environmental protection, livestock management and foodborne zoonoses

Even after almost two decades of combating Salmonella infections, this microorganism still represents an important cause of food-borne diseases in humans (DEFRA, 2009). It is estimated that Salmonella causes 93.8 million human infections and 155,000 deaths annually worldwide (Hendriksen et al., 2011). The prevention of Salmonella infection already starts at farm level and can be managed most successfully by a “holistic approach”. This means tackling the challenge of Salmonella prevention from all angles – approaching it with 360 degrees.

Within this concept, all potential entry sources and vectors (feed, day-old chicks, rodents, equipment, water, staff, etc.) are carefully considered when evaluating intervention strategies against Salmonella (Barrow et al, 2012). Based on research, at Elanco we understand that sustainable Salmonella control at poultry farms can be achieved through a “holistic approach” which is based on two main prophylactic columns:




*General Pre-harvest Prophylaxis: Biosecurity, rodent & pest control, cleaning & disinfection, health management, education & awareness:
- To reduce the infection pressure in the environment
- To prevent Salmonella from entering the animal house

*Specific Pre-harvest Prophylaxis: Vaccination, diagnostics & monitoring and nutritional management:
- To build bird immunity
- To prevent dissemination to other birds or natural reservoirs
